Class Blog Cameo 5/20

This week was our final week of Sports Med block 7. We got together as a class for our last time together and presented our semester two projects that finished up on our discussions and investigations on a proper diet and nutrition. Our projects had to be engaging (powerpoint, iMovie, Prezi, etc.) to the audience to discuss a “flaw” from either a fad diet that we chose to investigate several weeks ago, or own our own diets ourselves. It was very interesting to learn about the different types of diets and what can be dangerous that seem “normal” and an “easy” way to lose weight. In all, our class learned a lot about staying safe and eating properly in order to maintain an intense diet. Under eating and lack of proper nutrients were the most talked about in the projects, and seemed to be some of the most common mistakes made when trying out an excessive diet.

After presentations we all brought in food for a potluck and discussed the year and the good times we have had! Thank you Mrs. Kahn for everything you have done for us! 🙂

DT Project: Concussions in Youth Sports

Empathize: After doing research with my partner, Sophia, we noticed a huge affect of concussions on teenagers and children, due to sports and physical activity. Headcase company mentions how 47% of concussions in a survey in 2012 were during high school football. Many athletes who play physical contact sports such as football, basketball, and wrestling tend to have a higher risk of getting hurt and succumbing to possible head injuries such as concussions.

Define: According to Mayoclinic, a concussion is a traumatic brain injury that alters the way your brain functions, while Medlineplus describes it as a short loss of normal brain function in response to a head injury. Both of these definitions show how dangerous and harmful this injury can be on a person, let alone a child not fully grown. Concussions are treated ultimately by rest. However, even though limited activities and avoiding physical exertion may seem easy, it is very common for people to “ignore” these rules and get back quickly to their normal lives. This is where things can go terribly wrong, and one could actually get worse. When talking about concussions with athletes, it is very important and strongly advised, according to Mayoclinic, to always wear protective gear with any contact sport, regular exercise, and to inform your peers and teammates about the dangers of concussions.

Ideate: Sophia and I came up with the idea of talking to several athletes who have suffered from concussions. After researching with Sports concussion, it mentioned the prevention of concussions in ways of simply respecting the rules of the sport, examining the field, and learning proper techniques to stay aware of ones surroundings and safety. We came up with the idea of first coming up with a written test of what to ask these athletes. The questions ultimately ask about concussions to get a feel for how much they really know about concussions, and to see if they realize the intensity and severity of this subject.

Prototype: After answering the questionnaire, we created a youtube video explaining all of the information needed about concussions. After each athlete watched the video, we had them take the test again. After having about ten different athletes take the quiz, we got feedback we didn’t really want to see, which was that these athletes did not know much about the dangers of concussions and any of the specifics! This is where our video came into play. The second quiz went up in scores to almost 100% for each girl after watching our informative video. This simply shows that even though athletes know a lot about their sports, some may not be aware of the serious dangers that could come about with injuries. Being informed and aware of what could happen, in order to maintain safety is very important — specifically to those who constantly play contact sports. We decided to tell these girls to spread our video around to those who did not try this quiz out who play sports and do not know much about concussions, or even girls who have suffered from concussions and just want to learn more! There are many ways to stay aware about staying safe and healthy, and this is just one simple way to get the message across!

Exercise/Brain Function

After reading the article given to us on Quartz, I had a few take aways. The article started off by discussing how exercise is one of the best ways to overcome stress. The scientific reason is because exercising brings about the neurotransmitters one may lose from anxiety and depression, such as serotonin, noradrenalin, dopamine and endorphins. However, exercising can also simply just be something one can go to get their mind off anything.

Having an everyday or continuous routine is a great way to not only get the mind off any stress one may have, but also gets you in shape and keeps you healthy! Staying active early on and sticking to it is a great way to keep up the good habits. That is why I found it very interesting when the article mentioned the opening of several outdoor preschools, to prepare young children to stay active and finding exercise as a key way to help the brain to work effectively!

Digestive System and Immunity 

The digestive and immune system work together constantly. The digestive system breaks down large molecules, and consists of the mouth to the anus. The immune system has very important antibodies and other components to help fight invading organisms. According to livestrong.com, the digestive system depends on many of the immune responses the body forgoes. For example, the lysosomes in saliva breaks down bacteria. According to nutrihealth, every person is born with innate immunity. This is the response to foreign substances right away. Besides breaking down food, the digestive system over time actually really helps the immune system and it is important to keep that in mind!
Many athletes fall ill and worn down from excessive work and overdoing it. Nature.com mentions how overtraining is very common with athletes and can be severely dangerous to an athlete. If one does not slow down on the excessive amounts of training, it could turn into overtraining syndrome. After the shift to having this, a person can over go excessive fatigue, changes in mood, or even frequent illness. This could lead to losing the chance to play their sport or be able to exercise at all. In order to prevent this, it is important to be monitored by his/her coach and to know their limits. 

There are several ways an athlete can stay healthy and illness-free. Maintaining a healthy diet, having frequent checkups with the Doctor, and getting enough sleep are just a few of the easy steps!

My View on Nutrition

Growing up, I have learned to have many views on nutrition. Of course there are days where my family loves to enjoy life by having a yummy dessert or a delicious meal, we know how to limit those days. I do not come from a family where it is an extremely strict, no sugar or carb household, but I also don’t come from a free for all either. I see my household as a sort of in-between.

Since my dad is a firefighter/paramedic, he has been on many different medical calls in his lifetime. A lot of them have been on people due to health problems. Some of these health problems are from an unhealthy balance of eating and drinking. The amount of heart attacks my dad goes on is insane, and he makes sure to remind us and give us tips on how to stay healthy. Physically seeing the brutal consequences of what can happen due to improper nutrition is very scary and is really an eye opener to my dad. It really gives a different perspective on it all!

My family also makes sure to have everyone make frequent visits to the doctors office to get checked up on everything. I have actually dealt with a lot of health issues due to a genetic liver condition, which actually restricts me from excessive amounts of some foods. In all, my family and I make sure to do everything we can to stay healthy.

Heart Disease Prevention

Hi everyone! There are millions of different heartbreaking diseases and outbreaks that one could catch in this world. However, Heart Disease is a major killer. According to CDC.gov, about 610,000 people die each year from this disease. That is roughly 1 in every 4 deaths. Keeping in mind that Heart Disease is the number one leading cause for death of women in America, our class has come together into small groups to create brainstorms and ideas for possible prevention of this leading-death disease. The terrifying truth of the amount of fatalities due to this unfortunate disease proves there must be some sort of a boost of aim to fix this.

This is where our class came into play. The assignment given to us is strictly that in our groups, we must use all of our creative ideas to figure out what things could help rid Heart Disease. I love how hands on this project is and how it really gets us to think, and use our own input to make a difference in the world. My group specifically found that cholesterol, something that is regularly checked by all of us at our typical doctors offices, is a major leading issue if something goes wrong to prevent heart disease. The “something” that could go wrong in this case is an excessive amount in the blood. This leads to the clogging of arteries due to the buildup of too much cholesterol. Also known as atherosclerosis, this sad truth is a form of heart disease.

After more research with my group, according to the American Heart Association, we realized that LDL leads to artery clogging, while HDL is very beneficial to the arteries since it clears the excessive cholesterol. This led us to believe that if we were able to create a drink that helped rid the LDL and build up more amounts of HDL, this would be a small, but a beneficial way to prevent heart disease.

The juice created was made up of all sorts of fruits and berries (blueberries, bananas, apples, orange juice), as well as a fiber boost and some canola oil. The reason why we chose so much fiber is that it works in wondrous ways. According to WebMD, it not only potentially lowers cholesterol, but does many other beneficial acts to the human body and immune system. The berries and orange juice simply have antioxidants which help lower the bad (LDL) and higher the good (HDL).

After creating the juice, we tested it out on some classmates and teachers. Out of thirty tests, 24 said they enjoyed it. Only six tests did not enjoy the drink, but the results were great!

Although this is just a simple idea, it could be very beneficial to decreasing the impact of heart disease on women in America! If this juice idea became a bigger idea, it could possibly be shared to local juice and smoothie cafes such as Jamba Juice! If there was a way to make this idea a worldwide phenomenon, I guarantee there would be a major decrease in heart disease with women in America.

Don’t you love going to your favorite football team’s games? Or soccer games? All of us have probably at least seen artificial turf in our own experiences. Almost all of those games are on turf fields. It looks like normal grass fields, but recently this new type of field has been used on more than 11,000 fields in the United States. Half of the NFL also plays their games on this artificial field.
There are plenty of pros to turf fields and great reasons why this has become so popular. For example, not only is it low maintenance, a turf field does not need to be watered, which can save up to a million gallons of water in only a year. Also, it does not have to be mowed which saves time for maintenance, and these fields are also safer because of the turf being slip proof for athletes.
However, turf fields can be dangerous since they are noted to have possible harmful chemicals such as arsenic, acetone, lead and mercury. All of these can cause problems in the nervous system, such as confusion and dizziness. Many recent studies have tried to concern us with the dangers of these recent findings in these turf fields.
I personally think that we should be more aware and protective of the people using these fields, and we should find a way to make sure every field is safe to use, but there are also plenty of benefits to these fields to not forget. As long as the fields are safe, I don’t see why these fields wouldn’t be an innovative modern way of not only saving water, time and money, but also the environment by its way of using recycled tires and other resources to create the turf!

What can we do about it? Great question! I was thinking there must be a way to help. This is why I think we should find ways to raise money to fund new advancements to find a permanent cure and end to save lives and prevent the spread of Polio.

Talk to your local school, community, neighborhood, clubs, or sports teams to see what you guys can do to help! Even a simple fundraiser could help.

Diffusion RACE

Last week, our class got into groups of three and worked on a Diffusion RACE lab. Our class was told to fill glucose into a dialysis tube with a beaker of water. We soaked the dialysis tube in the beaker for several minutes and waited to see if there was a diffusion of glucose. To figure that out, we used the glucose test strips, which changed color based on the glucose amount in the water. Our group used 8 mL water and 2 mL of glucose. We hypothesized that the more liquid we used, the less glucose would be needed. Here are some photos of our investigation.
